Peer support is getting well deserved recognition through diverse recovery-oriented programs, support lines, education groups, hospital alternatives, etc. The Advocacy Initiative Network is dedicated to researching those programs that are working well and bringing to Maine the information and education opportunities for consumers in our state to create a Maine Peer Support Program.
Recovery is a reality. Those of us with mental illness "can and do recover a new and valued sense of self and purpose" (Deegan) in accepting every aspect of our lives; physical, intellectual, emotional, and, spiritual. "Recovery is a common human experience. Everyone experiences recovery at some point in their lives--from illness, from injury, from trauma" (Spaniola & Associates) "It is a deeply personally journey that is as individual as you are. Recovery is a process of changing one's attitudes, values, feelings, goals, skills and/or roles." (Antony) For many recovery is a way of life, an attitude and a way of approaching the day's challenges". (Deegan)
We believe that education and skills-development are fundamental to empowerment and the need for all consumers across our state is great. As the Advocacy Initiative Network continues to grow we will continue to search out "Peer Programs" that work and offer opportunities for learning and growth to all consumers across our state.
