Property Tax and Rent Rebate

You can now apply for a Property Tax and Rent Rebate for rent and property taxes paid in 2008. If you have not received an application, you can call 207-624-7894 and leave your name and mailing address, and one will be mailed to you. If you wish you can download an application at http://www.maine.gov/revenue/taxrelief/tnr.htm or for a faster rebate, it's easy to apply on-line at http://www.maine.gov/revenue/netfile/TNRIfile.htm You may qualify for a refund of up to $1,600 if: You do not have a spouse or dependent(s) and your 2008 household income was $61,400 or less; or You do have a spouse or dependent(s) and your 2008 household income was $81,850 or less AND Your 2008 property tax was more than 4% of your 2008 household income; or The rent you paid in 2008 was more than 20% of your 2008 household income. NOTE: Low-income seniors do not need to meet these requirements. You will have until June of next year - 2010 - to file for your 2008 rebate. Please note: you will be able to file for Property Tax and Rent Rebates for property taxes and rent paid in 2009 on your Maine State Tax return you file in 2010. Call the Maine Revenue Service at 207-626-8475 if you have questions about the application.
